In this video, we uncover the hidden challenges of osteoporosis, emphasizing the importance of early bone mineral density testing. It showcases the psychological and physical challenges faced after an undiagnosed spinal fracture, highlighting the need for early detection and support.

My whole career as a journalist, I traveled for work. I only had myself to rely on. Even after retirement, I was as independent as they come.

I'd been experiencing back pain that I noticed was getting worse and worse. So I booked an appointment with my doctor. When I went in, he took a height measurement and we realized I'd lost some height. It turns out I have osteoporosis and I'd fractured my spine without even knowing it.

I changed my way of life after that and relied on other people more. Not just doctors, but my family and friends too. I never had a bone mineral density test before my fracture. I wish I had. A bone fracture doesn't just impact you physically. It's psychological too.

When you start having to second guess doing the things you used to love. One thing I learned is that BMD testing is recommended for people 65 and up. Travel, being on my own, exploring new places. That's always been my happy place. Since my fracture, I worry about pushing myself too hard. I'm a lot more cautious now.
